In the 2024 budget proposal, Governor Newsom proposed cutting $33.2 million from the three-year $35 million California Nutrition Incentive Program (CNIP) budget under the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). The massive scale of this cut will destroy Market Match, a program funded by CNIP that draws down federal matching funds to California, supports California farmers, and has helped tens of thousands of Californians afford healthy food, especially during the pandemic and the period of inflation we have endured. Market Match provides low-income Californians with $10 to $20 additional funds when they use their CalFresh benefits to purchase fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets---293 around the state (see fmfinder.org)
There are actions you can take. Let your voice be heard.
Find your Assemblymember and Senator and tell them to continue the funding for the California Nutrition Incentives Program (CNIP), which provides a huge portion of the funding for the Market Match program.
