HUNGER ACTION DAY 2005

Hello All,

This has been the most critical time to address hunger in many, many years. In addition to low income residents of Los Angeles, who have had to struggle on insufficient money for a long time (and have recently suffered cuts to their monthly checks in the state budget), waves of recently laid off workers are seeking assistance. Many of them are finding, to their frustration, that they still make too much money to qualify for benefits. Others qualify for small amounts, but are reluctant to endure the hassles of having their fingerprints taken just to get $16 a month in food stamps.

LA County is at an "official" unemployment rate of 10%---this "official" measure not including people who have been furloughed, people whose unemployment benefits have run out, or people who have taken cuts in hours and benefits.

One in four kids in our county lives in a household in poverty.

Demand for emergency food is up 41%: meanwhile, tons of food are still wasted.

Hunger Action Day is a time for us to come together and demand solutions. We don't expect elected officials to do everything FOR us, but we should definitely expect that they work WITH us to end this problem.

We are asking you to join with us in Hunger Action Day this year, either in Sacramento or in Los Angeles---it's an event that will be held both places. We will be visiting our legislators and rallying in large numbers to keep this important issue in the spotlight.

Please review the attached materials and RSVP to participate in Hunger Action Day.

As we do every year, we've also scheduled trainings so you can become educated as to who your elected officials are, what proposals are before them, and how you can make those good proposals into reality. And---how you can become part of Hunger Action LA to join with others and contribute ideas of your own to end the crisis of hunger facing, ultimately, all of us. See below for information on the trainings.

Thanks very much and hope to hear from you soon! Hunger Action Day Registration Form here

ANTI-HUNGER ADVOCATE/AUTHOR JOEL BERG :
TWO LA AREA APPEARANCES THURSDAY MARCH 29

Joel Berg discusses and signs All You Can Eat: How Hungry is America?

Thursday, March 19, noon at Vroman's ** 7 pm at Book Soup
Former Clinton Administration official and nationally known anti-poverty advocate Joel Berg provides a blueprint to implement Obama's campaign pledge to end all child hunger in the U.S. by 2015 as a down payment on ending all domestic hunger. As hunger continues to increase in the current economic climate, Berg suggests immediate relief to those forced to join the soup kitchens and food pantries, as well as a long-term strategy. more...

This event will be cosponsored by Hunger Action Los Angeles.  Hunger Action Los Angeles works to end hunger and promote healthy eating in Los Angeles through education, advocacy, training and public policy. We are also promoting the free distribution of produce at the Hollywood Health Partnership on Wednesdays in Hollywood and assisting eligible persons in enrolling in food stamps. Annually we conduct trainings on advocacy for low income people and those working with them so they can learn how to create public policy that reduces poverty. We bring up to 100 people to Sacramento for Hunger Action Day each May:  this year, Hunger Action Day is on May 20 and will be held both in Sacramento and Downtown Los Angeles.
