A (usually) weekly update on food issues in L.A., promoting access to sufficient,
affordable, healthy food --with a focus on campaigns you can become active in!

ANTI HUNGER EDUCATION: HALA is working with low income people, nonprofit organizations and concerned residents to educate public officials about powerful anti-hunger legislation in conjunction with other groups statewide through the California Hunger Action Coalition (CHAC) www.hungeraction.net. We are bringing low income people directly affected by such legislation to the Capitol each May for Hunger Action Day

HOLLYWOOD HEALTH PARTNERSHIP: HALA sponsors the Hollywood Community Action Network, a group of homeless and formerly homeless persons, in outreaching to the homeless community each Wednesday through the Hollywood Health Partnership at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood.Low income people who have direct experience living on the streets assist others in finding resources for food, housing, and health care.

FOOD STAMP OUTREACH: HALA is collaborating with LA County Department of Public Social Services on increasing food stamp enrollment in Los Angeles County through promoting Food Stamp Outreach and reporting problems with the system (as part of the LEADER Stakeholder Group). We are also recruiting restaurants for participation in the Restaurant Food Stamp Program, so that homeless, disabled and elderly persons can get prepared meals using food stamps.

FARMER'S MARKET EBT OUTREACH: HALA is working with the Ecology Center in Berkeley to educate food stamp participants about the availability of fresh fruit at Farmer's Markets that accept the food stamp EBT card. Community educator Maribel Diaz is currently working with farmers' markets in Hollywood, Echo Park, and Adams/Vermont.

FOOD JUSTICE NEWS: HALA is informing the broader community on issues of hunger, food security, and the effects of the industrial food system through weekly e-newsletter “To All Those Interested in Food and Justice” Providing opportunities for low income people to share their stories so that others can understand why there is hunger in our community
HEALTHY FOOD PANTRY PROJECT: HALA is working to improve the nutritional quality of food served at food pantries through development of simple tools providers can use to track the nutrition of the food they're serving. The Wednesday Hollywood Health Partnership at First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood has begun serving fresh fruit at each of its programs. TOP OF PAGE
