Call today! Ask your California senator to support a Senate budget that restores the Cost of Living Adjustment for California seniors and people with disabilities who receive SSI/SSP. Calling today is our last chance to show huge support for this long overdue adjustment!
The Senate and Assembly are finalizing their budget proposals this week. The Assembly version of the budget includes a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for SSI/SSP recipients. The Senate version contains no COLA or grant increase of any kind. Our Senators need to hear that SSI COLAs should be a budget priority by Wednesday May 27. Please call the following key Senators by Wednesday May 27th and tell them you support a Senate budget that includes a COLA for SSI recipients.
Here's what to do:
1. Call Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon at (916) 651-4024 and tell the staff person who answers the phone that you want the Senator to support a Senate budget that includes a COLA for SSI recipients. Use the simple sample script in red, below. After you've completed that call, make another call, this time to Senator Mark Leno, Chair of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee, at (916) 651-4011.
2. Click here to go to the SSI Action Page. Enter your zip code in the box at the bottom of that page to find out who represents you in the California Senate.
Once you enter your zip code, your Senator's name and contact information will appear. Make a final phone call to him or her. *(Unless you already called them in Step One.)
Sample script for phone calls:
"My name is ____________ and I live in _____(city)_____. I am calling to ask the Senator to support the Assembly SSI/SSP cost of living adjustment in the state budget."
Your support will be recorded and the staff person will present a record of supporters to the Senator on Wednesday, at the end of the day.
