Support California Nutrition Incentives in the State Budget
Since last year, advocates for healthy food including Hunger Action LA, and led statewide by Roots of Change, have been speaking out for state support for nutrition incentives---programs including Market Match (currently at over 150 farmers markets in California) in which low income people receive bonus dollars to purchase healthy food, especially fruits and vegetables. The Nutrition Incentives Act would involve the state of California providing $5 million in funding which would result in the federal government providing an equal $5 million to use for Market Match as well as new programs at corner stores and pop up produce markets.
Nutrition incentives such as Market Match have already been proven to facilitate the purchase of healthy food by thousands of families across the state. Incentives also reduce hunger and in the case of the farmers’ markets, provide a steady stream of revenue for small farmers hit hard by the drought.
In a state with so many people in poverty and also suffering the effects of a poor diet, nutrition incentives are a tremendous and cost effective way to help thousands. Already other states, such as Michigan, have state-wide nutrition incentive programs, in which people getting SNAP (food stamps) can double their benefit amounts when they are used to purchase healthy foods.
There’s a state bill---AB 1321 --- to support Nutrition Incentives (authored by Assemblymember Phil Ting and co-authored among others by Senator Holly Mitchell here in L.A.) But a bill alone is not sufficient to create the funding---it needs to be designated in the state budget.
You can take a very simple step to win support for Nutrition Incentives in the state budget. Roots of Change has set up a page where you can fill in your name and a letter will go to several state leaders whose support would be essential to create this investment.
