March 31, 2014:
Cesar Chavez Day: As we honor the great farmworker leader today, a new food worker justice movement spearheaded by the Food Chain Workers Alliance is honoring the occasion by delivering a petition with 101,000 signatures and a letter signed by 100 food justice organizations including HALA to House Speaker John Boehner calling for a vote on raising the minimum wage. Joann Lo, the group’s director, reminds us in this article that “The nation's 20 million food workers make up one-sixth of the workforce in the U.S., making the food system the largest employer in the country. At the same time, over one-third of food system workers are paid less than $10.10 and make up the largest sector of minimum wage workers. “
