June 21, 2017: State and Federal Budgets, and Water

Earlier this week the California budget was submitted to the Governor, with mixed good and disappointing news for those struggling in poverty here. He has not officially signed it yet, but it could happen any time now. But the outcomes in Sacramento will be overshadowed by what’s going on in DC, if current trends hold out. This update includes info on how to begin the fight to preserve food assistance benefits for low income people in the hostile environment prevailing now in the federal government.

And as the rays of the sun’s longest day beam down on L.A. for the summer solstice, we can take solace in the fact that we are at least technically out of the drought, but have two issues on water that need your advocacy: extra safe water for human beings (see item number one) and for cheaper water rates for L.A.’s gardens (see item # 3.)

Current News and Recent Articles on Hunger 

A week at the very vortex at the center of the universe, as policies related to feeding hungry Americans locally and nationally converged almost literally on the same day. On Monday our state Assemblymembers voted to increase SSI benefits, but not for another four years: then on Tuesday, LA County Board of Supervisors resolved to help thousands of Angelenos enroll in CalFresh (SNAP) while the President released a budget proposal that would practically demolish the program. Here’s what you can do, below (for starters):

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet provides many benefits vital for the health and maintenance of the body. California’s Market Match incentive program allows low income shoppers to make healthy food choices by making fresh, locally grown produce at farmers markets affordable. In 2016, Market Match was offered at 260 sites by 37 community based organizations throughout the state.

Through the Market Match program, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in partnership with Old Town Newhall Farmers Market and Hunger Action L.A. has donated $5,000 to the program to benefit local, low income residents

ABC 7 covered the “Feeding the 5000” event at Pershing Square, teaming up numerous environmental and anti hunger groups to educate the public on reducing food waste. Hunger Action LA provided the Smoothie Bike which pulverized fruits and vegetables, which would have otherwise been thrown away, into delicious refreshing drinks.
